Arrive at the Maui Ocean Center on time each day and spend your week working up close and personal with the critters there. You’ll learn how to care for marine animals and educate the public about the importance of Maui’s coral reefs. During this hands-on experience, rotating in small groups, you will be taught by MOC aquarists and naturalists and assisted by curators as you feed and measure turtles, moon jellies, reef fish and various corals. You will be cleaning exhibits, recording behavioral data, speaking with visitors and much more! Lunch is included. NEEDED: Wetsuit or rash guard, mask, and transportation. Come get your feet wet and learn about Maui’s streams and streamlife. We will be joined by Skippy Hau, Aquatic Biologist who has specialized in streams, to guide us on our investigations. We will be learning how to identify, measure, count and collect stream life, including native and invasive species and going out to Honomanu and Wailuku area streams to put into practice what we learned. We will be using gopros, GPS, calipers, and some basic water quality measures to guide our study and learn how to do some analysis as we wrap our findings up into a final conservation video.

Where would our world be without the wonderful pollinators that buzz around our gardens and farms? This Winterim program will include a full hands on beekeeping curriculum from how to start and care for hives to harvesting and processing honey. Students will take part in a comprehensive farm tour and other farm activities including prepping beds and planting with our team and some harvesting.

This green thumb program will focus on expanding our outdoor edible garden and hydroponic tower growing system. Students will help update the garden by adding new beds, planting herbs and vegetables for the spring harvest, and improving the irrigation system. We’ll also dive into the world of microgreens, learning how they grow, their health benefits, and how to set up a space on campus to grow them hydroponically. In addition, we’ll work with Chef David to grow salad greens and microgreens in new hydroponic towers, creating a schedule to ensure the kitchen always has fresh produce. Activities include building and organizing the garden, visiting a microgreen farm, and setting up a special space for germinating seeds. It’s a great chance to explore sustainable gardening and contribute to the school’s food program!

In addition to organizing a shopping trip for fresh ingredients, students will spend Monday-Thursday cooking in the commercial kitchen at St. John’s Church in Keokea. Join chef Vinnie Linares on this fantastic culinary adventure in upcountry Maui. Of course you’ll be eating what you prepare! Drones are taking over! Learn how to fly the latest drones, including programming them for autonomous flight and data capture techniques such as photogrammetry to generate high-resolution 3D imagery that can be used as virtual environments for gaming and interactive storytelling.

Do you enjoy spending time with animals? Would you like to learn more about the wildlife, domestic and farm animals on Maui? Are you interested in knowing more about the efforts to offer them compassionate care?
This program will concentrate on several non-profit organizations that serve the island’s critters 24/7 with loving attention, food, health care, adoption services, and spay and neuter initiatives.
Our plans include helping out in Haiku at the East Maui Animal Refuge and the Leilani Farm Sanctuary. We’ll also volunteer at the Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation in Waiheʻe-Waiehu. We will be doing whatever the most pressing need is; from fencing and weeding, to cleaning, feeding, petting, and everything in between! Gloves, boots, comfortable work clothing, and a great attitude is recommended. Transportation and lunch are provided.

Students must be 16 years old to participate. Divers will learn: the physiology of apnea (breath holding) and how to safely maximize it, the physiology and physics of equalization and how to apply it to effective diving, techniques to improve oxygen use efficiency in the water, how to check their own safety and that of their partner(s) in the water, how to rescue others who may be in distress in open water, how to properly use and manage freediving equipment. Students will also have the opportunity to earn either AIDA level 1 or level 2 certification through a written test and applied diving tests (passing the certification tests is not a requirement for joining the winterim), and the opportunity to put their new diving skills to work with a reef clean up session.

Students must be 16 years old to participate. Help a family build their own home and know that, in addition to acquiring new skills and understanding, you will have forever defined the way this family views teenagers, strangers, and the world. When you help build a home for a neighbor you are building community and creating a true ohana. You may be asked to do anything from framing to landscaping by your experienced foreman. The home building is scheduled to take place in either Waiehu or Waiohouli. Van and beverages are included.

In this winterim, students will be fully immersed in the experience and everyday life of a Hawaiian lei maker. Each day will be a new exciting experience for the students. We will gather lei making materials from certain gathering areas around the island, some of these include Iao Valley, Olowalu, Keokea and more.
Students will also learn about the different native Hawaiian flora and fauna that we use in lei making, their cultural significance, and how to mālama (care for) these plants. Over the course of the four days, we will be camping out at Moʻoloa, which is a private sanctuary located in Makena. This property is a very special place and home to a large Native Hawaiian plant garden. Students will learn the history of this area and will also participate in aloha ʻāina (caretaking) opportunities while staying on the property.
Some of the lei styles that the students will learn include, Haku, Wili, Hili, Hīpuʻu, Humu Papa, Nīkiʻi and more. The goal of this winterim is to help the students gain a deeper appreciation for their island home, the Hawaiian Culture and lei making.

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is Hawai‘i’s number one natural attraction, with one of the world’s most active volcanoes--Kilauea. The park is designated as a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Other field trips may include the park’s native plant nursery and/or the rare plant propagation facility, growing some of the rarest species on earth. As guests of the Friends of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park we will receive four night’s lodging and meals at the Kilauea Volcano Military Camp located inside the park.This program and access to professionals in botany, geology, and volcanology are also sponsored by the Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park: www.fhvnp.org. In this fun and hands-on visual art Winterim, you will create a variety of art projects while working in the professional studios at the Hui. You will create wearable works of art possibly including prints on t-shirts, bags and more in the printmaking studio, photography with darkroom film processing and work with guest artists using watercolors and simple welding in the jewelry studio, . You may wish to bring extra funds to purchase additional silver metals or extra art supplies.

If you are a Junior or Senior you may choose to use this one-time opportunity to travel to out-of-state colleges and universities. Visit with campus representatives and tour schools you may be considering, get a better feel for the larger community and environs and determine if it is a good fit for you. You will need to fill out and return a simple college intent form (available for download on the Seabury Hall website and in the Upper School Office) and submit it to the college counseling office by the due date, December 7th. If your plans change at a later date and you find you are unable to travel, please notify us and we will do our best to find a relevant program of interest for you.

environmental stewardship and ensure the survival of coral reefs and sea turtles in

Our educational objectives and hands-on activities will include learning about

This is a spectacular opportunity to explore as much of urban and rural Oahu as you are able in four short days. With your group in January you will plan your own activities in advance (Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum, Shangi La, The Honolulu Museum of Art, UH Manoa, Valley of the Temples, Waikiki, Ala Moana,…the list is endless) and fly as a group on to Honolulu on Monday and home on Thursday.
Oahu is rich with natural and cultural resources as well (Lyon Arboretum, Lanikai Pillbox, Northshore, Makapuʻu, Kaniakapupu Ruins, Pali Lookout…). You’ll be spending 3 nights at Camp Mokuleia on the northshore right on the beach! The cabins are reserved for our group but you will need to bring your own sleeping bag, pillow, and towel as well as personal supplies.
Everything else is included to make this a trip you’ll never forget! You will need to provide your own transportation to and from the Kahului airport.

This adventurous course will offer a new perspective of the world through the eye of the camera. We will learn to 'see' with a camera, the way an artist sees, as we explore composition and photographic techniques on location. Nature is our classroom. We will go on a new photographic journey each day, as we explore unique aspects of our island life. Transportation and lunch will be provided.

This winterim will introduce students to the fields of conservation, land stewardship, and management through Hawaiian cultural practices. Aloha Pu’u Kukui will host two days of this winterim, leading students in a hike on Honolua ridge, where they will learn about forestry and ecosystems. Additionally, students will hike in the valley and through rivers, learning about traditional Hawaiian kalo farming practices. This winterim will also work with another organization, from which the students will learn about the kahuli (native land snail).

Students selected for this College Trip will be traveling to Southern California to tour a wide range of colleges and universities. We will be visiting two institutions a day where we will take a campus tour, attend information sessions, and meet with admissions representatives. This trip is designed to expose students to a great diversity of schools, therefore the institutions will vary in size, location, mission statement, academic and social offerings, and more. Students will gain valuable insight on how to research colleges, connect with admissions officers, and effectively learn the differences between types of colleges. The cost includes air and ground transportation, hotels, and time at Disneyland. Breakfast and lunch will be covered, and spending money for dinner will be distributed each day to students. Students will want to bring extra spending money.
Interested students are required to write a one-page response on what they hope to gain from visiting colleges. Responses should be emailed to Mr. Martin (mmartin@seaburyhall.org) by 12/7/24. This is an exclusive trip for Freshmen and Sophomores and space is limited.

Have you seen the water sport of Wing Foiling? The sport is thrilling, challenging, athletic, and most of all FUN!!! This is a four-day program for beginners who want to learn how to Wing Foil. While our focus will be Wing Foiling, our activity will be determined each day by the weather and wind forecast. The Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge is 277 acres of opportunity. The week will include a variety of possible activities such as making cordage, lei, creating natural dyes and weaving. Students will also contribute to the returning health of the rare native ecosystems through hands-on service projects while also learning the Hawaiian history of the area. If all goes well weʻll end our days with a dip in the ocean or stream. The Hawai‘i Land Trust ensures that Waiheʻe Refuge, this rich cultural site, will be forever protected. Waiheʻe is often hot and windy. Participants should be prepared with light colored clothes, hat, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, wear closed toed shoes suitable for hiking and comfortable clothes that can get dirty. As well as be prepared for rain with a rainjacket. Also a bathing suit and towel for swimming. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

The Ocean Bound Winterim is a week of exploring the reefs of South and West Maui. Depending on conditions, students will participate in 2-3 swims of about an hour each, examine undersea life, and learn about the geography, geology, mythology, history, and oceanography of our local waters. One of the days will consist of a two-person kayak trip where students see the shore from a different perspective and the back side of a reef, and hopefully get up close and personal some of our marine life, including whales, sea turtles, rays, and fish. This is a great opportunity to put your face in the water and see what is below.
Note: it is important that you have a level of comfort in the water and don’t mind swimming. You do not need to own your own snorkeling gear.

Get ready to unleash your creativity in this exciting and creative Winterim program led by a talented local artist and muralist from Maui! You’ll work together to brainstorm, design, and bring to life vibrant public art pieces that will be showcased around campus. Through hands-on projects, you'll learn about the art of storytelling through murals and how to use colors, shapes, and symbols to express your ideas. You may even go on a field trip to explore nature and gather inspiration from the beauty of the island. It’s a fun and unforgettable way to make art that connects with your community!

This winterim will introduce students to the fields of conservation, land stewardship, and management through Hawaiian cultural practices. Aloha Pu’u Kukui will host two days of this winterim, leading students in a hike on Honolua ridge, where they will learn about forestry and ecosystems. Additionally, students will hike in the valley and through rivers, learning about traditional Hawaiian kalo farming practices. This winterim will also work with another organization, from which the students will learn about the kahuli (native land snail).

This is an on campus program led by two of Mauiʻs most accomplished professionals. It is a terrific opportunity for anyone interested in working with performance and/or entertainment venues and systems, including our own. Peter Della Croce will lead you into a deep dive of all things related to sound design, production and troubleshooting. Amy Lordʻs decades of experience working at the highest levels in television and live staged theater and music productions is a great opportunity for any beginner or advanced technician desiring more knowledge about lighting. In this artistic and culturally significant program, students will learn about and make lau hala implements. Students will learn the plaiting techniques needed to make a small mat, baskets, bracelets, advanced bracelets ornaments and fans. Students will learn ulana lau hala from master Lau Hala practitioner Pohaku Kaho’ohanohano.
