Description
In this Winterim, students will be fully immersed in the art and everyday life of a Hawaiian lei maker. Each day brings a new and exciting experience, including gathering lei-making materials from sacred and scenic locations around Maui such as Iao Valley, Olowalu, and Keokea.

Students will explore the native Hawaiian flora and fauna used in lei making, learning about their cultural significance and how to mālama (care for) these plants. Over four days, participants will camp at Moʻoloa, a private sanctuary in Makena that houses a large Native Hawaiian plant garden. Here, students will learn the history of the area and engage in aloha ʻāina (land stewardship) activities.

Participants will practice a variety of lei styles, including Haku, Wili, Hili, Hīpuʻu, Humu Papa, Nīkiʻi, and more. Through hands-on learning and cultural engagement, students will gain a deeper appreciation for their island home, Hawaiian culture, and the art of lei making.
