Among the best known Japanese cultural artifacts is bushidō : the way of the samurai, an ethical and spiritual discipline that aimed to help practitioners cultivate equanimity, truthfulness and compassion in the midst of life’s uncertainties. This same set of principles has come to shape the spirit of modern Japan, including the Japanese diaspora that spread to the Hawaiian islands beginning in the late 19th century.
Join us for a taste of this rich and diverse history as we explore the cultural influences that continue to inspire Maui’s Japanese-American community. Each day we’ll learn about and engage in a new Japanese art or martial art form with a master practitioner, coupled with a sensory experience of the cuisine that has come to embody the values of this magnificent civilization.
