Description
Step into the rich traditions of Hawaiian voyaging and community leadership in this hands-on Winterim program! Students will immerse themselves in Hawaiian cultural knowledge and practices, gaining a foundational understanding of the traditional Hawaiian star compass and ancient navigation techniques. Beyond theoretical training in seamanship skills, participants will step aboard to experience sailing on a traditional Hawaiian voyaging canoe (waʻa kaulua).
A central pillar of this program is community service and outreach. After receiving mentorship from expert educators, students will put their knowledge into action by visiting local schools, engaging with keiki and youth, and facilitating hands-on educational activities. Join us to learn, practice, teach, and serve while helping to perpetuate voyaging traditions for the next generation!
Please note: This program is open to students in grades 9–12. Students should be willing to actively engage in learning and to support Hui o Waʻa Kaulua in their community outreach mission. No previous voyaging or teaching experience is required, but students must be able to swim. We are looking for students who are curious, responsible, and ready to learn.
