Description
Ever wonder what it actually takes to build something, from the first sketch to the finished building? This program gives students a hands-on look at construction management and the construction industry, no experience needed. The week kicks off with a tour alongside an architecture division, where students see how projects start on paper long before anyone picks up a tool. Next, it's out to active home construction sites in Lahaina, plus behind-the-scenes visits to suppliers most people never get access to, including Hawaiian Cement, Walker Industries, Hawaii Materials Recycling, and other vendor partners. Midweek, students head to civil construction projects in progress, potentially with the Wastewater Reclamation Division and the Department of Water Supply, watching heavy equipment at work and learning how all the moving pieces of a project fit together. The week closes out in the classroom with a rundown of civil construction management basics and an introduction to civil engineering as a career path. Students leave with a real understanding of how a construction project comes together from start to finish, and a clearer sense of the career options this industry has to offer.
By the end of the week, students will have a full picture of how a construction project moves from design to completion, and the range of careers available across the industry.
